DRY ICE Dry Ice is made by lowering the pressure of liquid CO2, through a nozzle or other constriction. A portion of the liquid passing through the constriction vaporizes and sub-cools the remaining liquid, converting it into fine flocculent particles of solid CO2, commonly referred to as “Dry Ice Snow”. This “Dry Ice Snow” can be dispensed as snow, or can be formed into various shapes (pellets or blocks) by compressing the snow into the desired configuration. Carbon Dioxide “Dry Ice Snow” in any form will change directly to vapor (sublimation) and leave no liquid residue like water ice. The temperature of dry ice at atmospheric pressure is one hundred and nine degrees below zero (141 degrees colder than water ice) this extremely low temperature accounts for its extensive use as a refrigerant. Applications for use of Dry Ice in industries include: Food Preservation -“Dry Ice Snow” is used to chill, crust, firm and freeze meats, vegetables and other foods to keep them fresher longer. Spot Cooling -“Dry Ice Snow” is used in both food and non-food cooling or freezing applications. When process temperature control is needed, dispensing equipment is available, either as a new process or an adaptation to your existing equipment. Meat and Poultry Process—Temperature Control - During grinding and mixing operations heat builds increasing the temperature of the product, adding Dry Ice during the mixing and blending insures that the product remains at desired temperature, retarding bacterial growth, retaining freshness and maintaining bloom. The temperature of trim and deboned beef or poultry, holding for further processing, can be controlled manually or automatically with dispensing equipment sized for your process. Industrial Cleaning—Dry Ice Pellets used for industrial cleaning offer definite advantages over conventional abrasive blasting or chemical washes. Blasting with CO2 pellets eliminates the need for media clean up or separation. The process will remove rust, paint, petroleum, chemical residue, grease, grime, graffiti and other coatings.
